Western infusion

A basket infuser being lifted from a large glass pot of Western-style loose-leaf tea.

Everyday cups and larger pots

A moderate leaf-to-water ratio and one longer, complete infusion.

Starting point

About 2.5–3.5 g per 250 mL. Match temperature and 1.5–5 minute contact time to the tea family.

What you need

  • Kettle
  • Scale or teaspoon
  • Pot or mug
  • Strainer
  • Timer

Method

  1. Warm the vessel if useful.
  2. Measure leaf and fresh potable water.
  3. Steep for a deliberate time.
  4. Remove or fully decant the leaf.
  5. Adjust one variable next time.

Watch for

A brewing chart is a starting map. Particle size, roast, compression, water and taste can move every number.
